Go ahead Mako My Day

Another vintage TV show, Hawaii Five-O is making a comeback. Remember the credits, Kam Fong as Chin Ho?

On M*A*S*H*, an enemy medical officer was played by one-name actor Mako. The Japanese actor played at least three other characters on the series, plus the movie Pearl Harbor and many other film roles.

Mako also played bit parts in the original Hawaii Five-O series.

  1. For the purist, the re-fried "Hawaii-Five 0" (zero, not oh) is undistinguished. One has to wonder about "creativity" of Hollywood, when winners from the past are recast. Like remakes of other series, imitation is not flattery.

My parents lived in 12th floor condo in downtown Honolulu. Mom related how she would spend the afternoon watching shooting below. She met Jack Lord at church one Sunday, and life for her was never the same!

The original series just did a mini run leading up to the kick off of the new program. Compared to what we see on TV nowadays, it is "campy."

Steve McGarrett was the quintessential delegator; Chin Ho – do this! Kono – do that! Duke – find something to do! And, of course, Dano – Book 'em!

The chemistry of the cast. That is what makes the original "Hawaii Five Oh" so great. Like other "re-makes," I predict the new series will fade into obscurity …
